Ailanthus Recordings

Chief KeefGlory Boyz Entertainment
MigosYung Lean

Slug Christ

Interview with H | p s

First, Can you explain H | p s simply?

Hips is an exploration of pop music using noise elements, like feedback and extreme distortion, as contrast with pop vibes while trying to keeping as simple as possible. while trying to keep things as simple as possible

What's your inspiration to make songs?

Slug Chz inspiration comes from everything i experience. musically i take influence from 50's pop and 80's pop punk. lyrically I often bring up women and negative emotions.

As you said, I feel the noise while hearing your songs. How do you think about 'Noise'.

noise is the outward expression of the unconscious. music is a very conscious thing, you use certain frequencies out of a limited ranged to create melody and harmony. noise is the antithesis to music, yet at the same time its a section of music. Basically what i want to do is present the listener with equal parts conscious song writing (representative of the ego) and stream-of-conscious noise elements (representative of the soul).

I think It definitely connects your songs' attraction.
Btw, when I interviewed Ailanthus Recordings' organizer, he said about you.
What is Ailanthus Recordings to you?

They're cool dudes. I honestly haven't talked to them that much. Ryan, the guy behind Dudes, is the one the set up Ailanthius putting out the split digitally.

What music scene(or artists, labels) you pay attention now?

the rap scene is definitely where my heart is at right now. Been listening to alot of Sosa and the rest of the GBE clique, Migos out of my city ATL, yung lean, and a lot of the music my friends are currently putting out.

Last question. What do you plan in future?

as for hips probably one more EP, maybe full length, then im taking a break from the project to pursue other projects. I have R&B project called holy lover that i do with a friend of mine. I do lead vocals and production while my bro does guitar and backing vocals. we both have a hand in songwriting. Also I rap and produce beats under the name Slug Christ which im currently in the process of finishing up a mixtape called 'Genocide'. it features production and verses from me and my friends.

Interview with DUDES

Can you explain DUDES simply?

DUDES is a recording project created in the image of a band. I basically make songs on my computer and perform them live by myself, or with the help of a few friends.

When I listen DUDES' songs, I feel some kind of nostalgia. How do you think about nostalgia?

I don't really think about nostalgia but I definitely feel it. I'm one of the more nostalgic people I know. Music and nostalgia can be closely related, but it's also kind of personal and abstract so I don't really know what to say about it. I've seen a fan write that they find DUDES very nostalgic so I guess people relate to it though.

You've released your stuff via Ailanthus Recordings. What is AR to you?

I met organizer on last.fm when I was promoting an album I recorded as Nature's Kid by sending out personalized messages to people. He ran a really dope blog, and was the first person to ever "blog" about my music. I was a really big fan of his blog and mixes, and he liked the DUDES stuff when it came out, so we just kinda became online buddies. It was cool to have him release the EDEA split because I've found out about so much good music from him.

What music scene(or artists, labels) you pay attention now?

I find it really hard to keep up with "music scenes" because music is more democratized than ever right now (meaning there's more being made and we're being exposed to more), and genres are blurring. I try and keep up on stuff that's worth checking out through word of mouth from friends and bloggers that I like. You kind of just have to trust people, and have an open mind when you explore for yourself.

What do you plan in future?

I actually have a new EP done right now that I'm sort of sitting on to make sure its 100% right. I haven't told many people this besides a few close friends, but I'm highly considering changing the artist name from DUDES to something new for this next release. I guess this can be the "pre-announcement". I'm pretty sure I know what the name is but don't wanna say it yet in case I change my mind. Keep your eyes open and your ear to the ground.
